An abdominal aortic aneurysm is defined as an aortic diameter of at least 3 cm. Elective surgery is indicated when the aortic diameter is at least 5.5 cm with no contraindications. Men are approximately six times more likely to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm than women. The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) assesses the evidence for screening programmes against a set of internationally recognised criteria.
Trans women and non-binary people assigned male at birth who are registered with a GP as male are also routinely invited for screening. Trans women who are not registered as male with a GP will not routinely be called, however. (for example, due to family history of the condition) they can talk to their GP about the possibility of having a scan outside the screening programme
