In 2016, the electronic Frailty Index (eFI) was developed and validated which has been useful in identifying frail patients, especially in primary care. This tool uses routine health-record-containing presentations of frailty syndromes and other conditions called deficits and a score is arrived on categorising patients into fit, mildly frail, moderately frail and severely frail. However, the eFI in itself is a stratification tool and not a diagnostic tool.
Further assessment of frailty can be made using other tools like Clinical Frailty Scale, Gait Speed Test, Timed Up and Go test to confirm frailty. All these tools are currently embedded in SystemOne and EMIS for GPs to utilise while reviewing patients.
