Deformity which occurs when the great toe moves towards the second toe (and may sometimes overlie it) - causes a prominent first metatarsal head, sometimes associated with bursitis. Can cause pain when walking or wearing shoes.
Consider Xray to assess severity.
Causes: Idiopathic, can run in families. Wearing badly fitting shoes can make bunions worse. Rheumatoid arthritis. Gout.
Management: Non-surgical: analgesia, orthotics (insoles) and bunion pads. Surgery e.g. osteotomy, arthrodesis, excision (Keller's arthroplasty), minimally invasive bunion surgery.
