Systemic inflammatory mediators, endothelial dysfunction, and alteration of lipid metabolism contribute to excess cardiovascular disease in rheumatoid arthritis. Although steroids may reduce inflammation, they appear to be associated with increased cardiovascular disease, even at low doses.
