Ischaemic damage and bacterial overgrowth can result in necrotising enterocolitis (NE): abdominal distension and blood in the stool. Progression to bowel perforation and clinical shock can occur. Treatment requires cessation of oral feeding, parenteral nutrition, circulatory and respiratory support. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are also often administered but despite intensive treatment, NE carries a high morbidity and mortality. Occurs earlier than interssuception.
