Haemoglobinopathy such as B Thalassaemia trait typically produces a normal or low Hb and a normal haematocrit. In contrast to iron deficiency however the MCV and MCH are disproportionately low in relation to Hb.
Haemoglobin electrophoresis will be useful to diagnose other causes of microcytic, hypochromic anaemia such as haemoglobinopathies or thalassaemia.
Homozygous SCD patients (HbSS) have two copies of this altered Hb
