remnants of the tract via which the thyroid gland descends into the neck from the foramen caecum. Can present as a cystic swelling below or at the level of the hyoid bone within the midline. On examination, the cyst moves superiorly on protrusion of the tongue or on swallowing. Tendency to present following an URTI. Surgical intervention is usually indicated to prevent future infections.
